A battery energy storage system facility in the far north end of Peoria has been going through the planning stages with the city.
The proposed BESS facility is planned to be built next to the north APS substation at Old Carefree Highway, just west of Lake Pleasant Parkway, according to city officials.
The facilities allow electricity providers to store electricity when it is cheap and discharge it during high-demand periods.
A BESS facility receives excess electricity during the day from the electric grid and stores it in large lithium-ion batteries. They are built near electrical substations operated by a utility such as APS or SRP.
The Beehive Storage Project will became operational in 2026. The facility will serve about 40,000 homes, according to APS.
