The Yuma Planning and Zoning Commission declined to advance a rezoning request for nearly 600 acres near State Route 195, a site some commissioners believe could be used for a future spaceport.
The 597-acre property, located at the northeast and southeast corners of State Route 195 and Avenue A alignment, is currently zoned for agricultural use. The city is seeking to rezone it to heavy industrial.
City staff described the request as speculative, but several commissioners questioned whether the property is intended for the proposed spaceport. After the meeting, some commissioners said they were convinced it was.
