The La Paz County Board of Supervisors has recommended census tract that covers much of Quartzsite and extends north to the junction of State Routes 95 and 72 be declared an “Opportunity Zone.” Under a program begun in 2018, this will entitle the area to tax breaks and other incentives to encourage economic development.
This happened at the Board’s May 4 meeting.
The U.S. Treasury Department, through the Internal Revenue Service, establishes low-income census tracts as Opportunity Zones. The Arizona Commerce Authority asks each county in the state to recommend a census tract for this designation. The recommendations are sent to Gov. Katie Hobbs, who then passes the recommendations on to authorities in Washington who make the final designation.
