Immigration funding highlights intraparty tension ahead of LD21 Democratic primary

A Democratic primary battle in Tucson is taking shape after two state legislative candidates joined a growing wing of Democrats looking to challenge “Democratic complacency.”

Four Democrats are running for the two available House seats in Legislative District 21. Each candidate will be participating in the Arizona Citizens Clean Elections Commission debate series on May 27.

Incumbent Reps. Consuelo Hernandez and Stephanie Stahl Hamilton are seeking re-election, but they’re not running on the same slate. Hernandez has campaigned with Democrat Maritza Higuera, who co-owns the M&M Family Orchard.

In a Feb. 26 news release, Higuera said she was alarmed by recent legislative actions, including last year’s budget approval of $24 million for the state’s gang and immigration intelligence team (GIITEM) by many Democrats. She also said in that news release that she’s willing to challenge both “Republican extremism and Democratic complacency” if elected.
