After making serious investments in expanding Chandler’s supply of affordable housing units, City Council is now turning its attention to the “missing middle” – homes priced below the median that working-class residents can afford.
Council held a work session on June 11 to look at its different options and provide staff direction on how they want to proceed in bringing more housing to the city.
“Missing middle is absolutely the way that all of the cities are moving,” said Leah Powell, a deputy city manager.
She said she just returned from a national conference where that topic was paramount. “I got some great examples of how to do it, which I really appreciate. This is really the trend everyone is taking a look at.”
Council celebrated the opening of its first Rental Assistance Demonstration (RAD) project, the Villas on McQueen. That added 157 new housing units. The project cost $58 million and was a public-private partnership.
Residents from two existing city housing projects that were built in 1972 are moving into the new place. One of those housing projects is scheduled to be demolished and replaced by the city’s second RAD project, Haven on Hamilton.
