There are four seats on the July 21 ballot. Les Buchner, Greg Curl, Rita Ann Ezzai and Jose “Mo” Maldonado are competing for three four-year seats. Nicole Buccellato is running unopposed for a two-year term.
If the economy holds and thousands of new homes are built in a few years, what should the town be doing now to ensure the best preparation and outcomes?
Buchner: Council needs to work with the building owners and businesses to help revitalize downtown Florence. Making downtown more attractive and a wonderful reflection of Florence’s heritage would be very beneficial to our community and for future growth.
The town needs to develop an integrated infrastructure plan that incorporates aging and future growth needs, at a minimum including water, wastewater and road improvements. Responsible and strategic growth planning is imperative if we are to avoid unchecked urban sprawl.
The integrated infrastructure plan needs to be aligned with a longer-term Florence economic development plan. An Economic Development Commission or group that includes people with the right knowledge and skill could help guide development strategy. Thoughtful planning today will shape the quality of life for generations to come.
Curl: With new homes planned for Florence, it’s important to start preparing for responsible growth that supports infrastructure costs while preserving Florence’s unique character. I believe encouraging business development is essential, and forming an economic task force of local leaders can help identify and attract businesses that are well-suited for Florence. It’s very important to me that Florence keeps its distinct identity rather than fading into neighboring communities.
Ezzai: If thousands of homes are built, Florence must ensure infrastructure keeps pace. Roads, water, sewer, public safety and schools must be fully planned before growth occurs. We must also scale emergency services and improve traffic planning to protect quality of life. Growth should not shift unintended costs to residents. At the same time, expanding economic development is essential to diversify revenue. Responsible growth means balancing development with infrastructure, fiscal stability and preservation of Florence’s character.
