High-rise buildings for Casa Grande back on agenda; staff opposes

A plan to build a high-rise hotel and apartment building on Casa Grande’s east side is back on the agenda for the Planning and Zoning Commission.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. Thursday in the council chambers at City Hall, 510 E. Florence Blvd. It is open to the public.

high_rise_building_silhouette_clip_art_26228Plans for the Station II originally were scheduled for discussion last month, but developers pulled the item from the agenda to make revisions after city Planning and Development staffers recommended the project be denied.

The proposed plan for Station II, a 34-acre swath off Jimmie Kerr Boulevard and directly behind the outlet center, now known as Home Center Factory Direct, calls for changing the land use from commerce and business to major commercial residential and retail.

Several urban-style buildings are planned for the area including a 110-foot hotel building, a 165-foot apartment building, a six- level parking garage, a four-story anchor store and assorted retail and office structures with heights up to 75 feet.

AZ Outlet Investment owns the development site and the outlet center. The company is affiliated with AZ Sourcing — the developers of the planned PhoenixMart, a 1.5-million-square- foot commercial venture planned near Florence Boulevard and Toltec Buttes Road.

But city staff does not approve of the development plan for the Station II, even after revisions were made, and is recommending the commission reject the project.
