Gilbert approves leasing out agricultural parcel

The Gilbert Town Council on Tuesday, Sept. 17 approved a plan to lease out another 50 acres purchased from dairy owner Bernard Zinke, allowing the land to return to agricultural use as it awaits future park development.

Last month, Gilbert agreed to lease 80 acres at Greenfield and Chandler Heights roads to local grower Jason Perry for $70,000 over five years, with a mutual option to renew the lease.

Gilbert acquired both parcels in 2009 as part of a controversial $50.2-million land deal that paid Zinke $300,000 an acre for the land and allowed officials to acquire right-of-way for road improvements.
