The Tolleson Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously voted Sept. 24 in favor of a zoning district designed to move forward a $9.2 million downtown revitalization project.
The proposal now goes to the City Council, which is likely to consider the zoning district during its second meeting in October.
Tolleson City Council had planned to vote on Downtown Tolleson Commercial Office Residential Entertainment District, or CORE, after the commission’s Tuesday vote, but put off the decision until mid-October because of an amendment recommended by the commission.
The proposed zoning district will guide the development of a pedestrianoriented area with a mix of housing, offices and shops. The district envisioned by Tolleson leaders will have elements to encourage use of mass transit and to limit traffic.
