Compared to marriage, the rights of those in a civil union are limited. In Sedona, these rights will now include: health care visitation, use of and access to city facilities and city employee benefits.
By a 5-2 vote Tuesday, Sedona became one of just four communities in Arizona to now recognize civil unions. While some see it as a symbolic gesture for partners of the same sex, others see it as a waste of time and money since the state doesn’t recognize gay marriage, according to public comment at the meeting. Either way, Sedona now joins Tucson, Bisbee and Jerome as those that have passed ordinances in favor of civil unions.
