A peek at Cubs’ new Mesa digs

About four months from now, always loyal and perennially optimistic Chicago Cubs fans will no doubt crowd around a walkway that leads from the new clubhouse at Mesa’s Riverview Park to the new stadium.

Fans will pester players for autographs and shout words of encouragement to the 2014 Cubs as Mesa and the team launch a new tradition at the Cactus League’s latest glimmering training facilities.

It wasn’t hard to imagine the excitement that is anticipated for the stadium’s grand opening next spring as the Cubs hosted a media preview on Thursday.

The 2014 Cactus League season will represent a fresh start for a team that has historically been a powerhouse at the gate, attracting fans from throughout the Midwest and Valley, but has struggled mightily on the field. The Cubs last won a World Series 105 years ago, in 1908, when they defeated the Detroit Tigers.
