Scottsdale polo organizers hope to change sport’s perception

The Arizona Polo Championships at WestWorld is only in its third year, yet polo has a long history in the Valley.

While it has diminished in scope, polo has been played in the Valley for more than 80 years. Progress has hurt a 2,500-year-old sport as development overran polo fields, which are larger than nine football fields, said Diego Florez, Arizona Polo Club manager. The Scottsdale-based organization has 14 members, down from about 85 in the previous two decades.

Florez is optimistic that next weekend’s Scottsdale Ferrari-Maserati Polo Championships: Horses+Horsepower will change that.

Men from the Arizona Polo Club with play the U.S. Women’s All-Star Team, led by Sunny Hale, the first woman to be on the winning U.S. Open Polo Championship team. The “Battle of the Sexes” match is on Saturday, Nov. 2.
