After being forced to hand over a $27 million sewer plant to Marana, Pima County has also been forced to make a $700,000 debt payment the Legislature said the town was supposed to assume when it mandated the transfer.
Last year the town of Marana pushed through a state law that allowed the town to take over the county’s Marana Wastewater Reclamation Facility, 14393 W. Luckett Road, for just the outstanding debt, which is about $16.5 million including interest.
The county sued, challenging the constitutionality of the state law giving the plant to Marana. Although a $453,000 principal payment and a $258,000 interest payment were due to bondholders July 1, the Maricopa County Superior Court hearing the case has extended the deadline for Marana to pay multiple times.
