Mohave County elected leaders said Monday that they want to ensure they aren’t surprised by something that is snuck into state legislation that impacts the region.
The Board of Supervisors didn’t formally decide to act on potentially hiring a lobbyist or legislative liaison at Monday’s regular meeting, but they directed staff members to come up with alternatives for future consideration.
The problem, as board members stated, isn’t necessarily from major legislative action that in general terms, they can track from Mohave County. It can come from legislative additions or deletions that can occur in the hallways of the Arizona State Capitol before committee meetings that don’t get fully vetted, they said.
Supervisor Buster Johnson, who brought the idea forward, suggested it was important to potentially hire a consultant with “a good working knowledge of who the players are.”
“We don’t seem to be getting timely reports (on legislation impacting Mohave County),” Johnson said of the situation in past legislative sessions.
