Permit increase a good sign for new-home market in Phoenix area

The Valley’s new-home market is recovering slowly, with different results city by city.

Phoenix, Mesa, Avondale, Casa Grande, Queen Creek and Scottsdale saw big jumps in the number of houses built in 2013.

Other cities, including Gilbert, Chandler and Apache Junction, experienced slowdowns in homebuilding during the past year after seeing big gains in 2012.

Phoenix has seen two years of growth, including infill development in the city’s core, said Cindy Stotler, assistant director of Phoenix planning and development.
