Residential areas in Gilbert could be site of ‘sober houses’

The Gilbert Planning Commission last week cast its support for a new ordinance that would allow group homes for recovering substance abusers to set up in residential neighborhoods, subject to compliance with town regulations.

The unanimous recommendation Feb. 5 marked an important step toward legitimizing the “sober house” industry in Gilbert, and the ordinance is scheduled to go before the Town Council for a final decision on Thursday, March 27.

Proponents say that sober-living houses, similar to halfway houses, can accomplish much good for their residents, who often have recently been released from a rehab center or jail and have nowhere else to go.
