After a good deal of deliberation, Coolidge Mayor Tom Shope said he will not run for reelection when his term ends in November, instead tossing his hat into the race
for justice of the peace in Precinct 1, which covers the Florence and Coolidge area.
Shope, who is in his third stint as mayor since 2006, sent an e-mail to city council members and then city staff informing them of his decision late Monday night.
He said he intends to serve out the remainder of his term while campaigning, but left open the possibility that might not work out because of the time commitment necessary to run.
