A piece of Kingman history makes way for development

KAAA and KZZZ’s former broadcasting station on Hualapai Mountain Road, which was one of Arizona’s oldest radio facilities, is no more now that buildings on the property have been razed to make way for new development.

“The building was built in the 40s and has seen the times,” said Billy Williams, CEO of Cameron Broadcasting, which owns the site where the station broadcast until 2001. “It’s been a few years and we didn’t want any safety issues.”

As of Monday, only the 200-foot tower remained. That tower will come down and be replaced with a newer tower off of Jackson Street.

One feature of the old radio station was a government-built bunker underneath the station in case of a Cold War emergency.
