Gilbert’s shortened workweek shows energy savings

About 14 months after Gilbert shifted to a four-day workweek, officials say the town has received a mostly favorable response from residents and employees while reaping a modest savings in energy costs.

In July 2011, most Gilbert employees officially changed from a standard five-day schedule to work four, 10-hour days, and administrative offices began operating from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.

Emergency services, garbage collection, and recreation facilities continued to operate Fridays, however.

Gilbert budget analyst Kurt Sharp and Assistant Fire Chief Jim Jobusch, who served on a task force organized to analyze the new schedule’s impact, presented their findings to the Town Council during a study session on Tuesday.

Surveys completed at town service counters indicated that 87 percent of walk-in customers expressed either a positive or neutral reaction to the new service hours, Sharp said.

Town offices now open an hour earlier and close an hour later, allowing many residents to visit Town Hall at a time more convenient for them, Sharp said.
