(PHOENIX) A new property tax on leased rooftop solar systems is hugely unpopular with likely Republican Primary voters according to a new survey commissioned by TUSK which stands for Tell Utilities Solar won’t be Killed.
The poll was conducted by Mc Laughlin and Associates, a national public opinion firm whose clients include six sitting U.S. Senators, 20 current U.S. Congressmen, the Republican National Committee and more than a dozen state GOP committees.
This respected GOP polling firm asked 400 likely Republican Primary voters on June 7th and 8th about a property tax being imposed on leased rooftop solar systems. The poll asked if a new property tax on tens of thousands of rooftop solar users, including many seniors within the state, is a good idea or a bad idea. A mere 5.5% support the tax.

The poll asked likely Republican Primary voters about their choice for Arizona Governor in the upcoming GOP primary.

T.U.S.K. believes that rooftop solar is similar to a charter school—it provides a competitive alternative to the monopoly. Monopoly utilities aren’t known for reducing costs or for driving business innovation, but the solar industry is. Solar companies have a track record of aggressive cost reduction. The more people use rooftop solar, the less power they need to buy from the utilities. Energy independence means smaller profits for the utilities, so they are doing everything they can to stop the spread of independent solar.
