Mesa mulls zoning for latest project

In this Valley, it sometimes doesn’t take very long for the middle of nowhere to become the middle of somewhere.
And even if it does take a while, developers are willing to wait, sometimes for years, for things to roll their way.
There’s no better illustration of that than far southeast Mesa, where for years the only things heard were the occasional airplane at a forlorn, former military base and the drone of autos at General Motors’ isolated test track.
Now, the old air base is a booming civilian airport, Phoenix-Mesa Gateway. The test track, abandoned by GM three years ago, is being converted to master-planned communities.
And just east of the former GM property is a barren tract that its owners hope to transform into a vibrant, sustainable neighborhood beginning less than two years from now.
Last month, Mesa took the first steps toward allowing that to happen. This week, the Planning and Zoning Board is expected to take another.
