State House Speaker Andy Tobin held a narrow lead over Eastern Arizona rancher Gary Kiehne Wednesday morning for the Republican nomination in Arizona’s 1st Congressional District primary election.
The race see-sawed between Tobin and Kiehne all Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. With all but one of the sprawling district’s 327 precincts counted, Tobin held a 480-vote lead. State Rep. Adam Kwasman was a distant third.
The winner will face Democratic incumbent Ann Kirkpatrick in the November general election.
More on the local level, Newszap reports the race for five seats on Paradise Valley Town Council from a field of eight candidates is too close to call, says Paradise Valley Town Clerk Duncan Miller.
“I do not know how many ballots remain to be counted,” he said in an Aug. 27 written response to e-mailed questions. “There was heavy turnout at the polling location at Town Hall which could change the outcome.”
Take a look at the vote breakdown:
For three seats: Paul Dembrow 26.5%; Maria Syms 23.73%; Jerald Bien-Willner 18.52%
For two seats: Mark Stanton 39.66%; David Sherf 32.79%
Paradise Valley Mayor-elect Collins ran unopposed for the two-year term of mayor. Official candidates in the August primary were: Giselle Alexander, Mayor-elect Collins, Councilman Paul Dembow, Brad Forst, Councilman David Sherf, Mark Stanton, Maria Syms, Daran Wastchak and Jerry Bien-Willner. Councilman Sherf, Mr. Forst and Mr. Stanton seek to fill the two-year term left by the vacancy of Vernon Parker while Councilman Dembow, Mr. Wastchak, Ms. Alexander, Mrs. Syms and Mr. Bien-Willner are pursuing the four-year seats. The final seat, which was left following the resignation of Councilman Dan Schweiker last spring, will be filled by appointment, town officials have said. Final results will be available 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29 while Mr. Bien-Willner, Mrs. Syms and Councilman Dembow appear to be front-runners in the race for three seats for four-year terms, unofficial results show.
