Phoenix has been incorporated since 1881, yet plenty of open land to develop remains.
As the economy recovers from the Great Recession, city officials have seen more projects being built in recent months.
Phoenix officials received more than double the number of residential building plans in fiscal 2014 compared with fiscal 2013, jumping to 488 submissions from 233, according to the Phoenix Planning and Development Department.
Commercial building plans also shot up, hitting 1,246 in fiscal 2014 from 803 in fiscal 2013.
