Secretary of State Ken Bennett, who lost in the Republican gubernatorial primary, has thrown his support to Doug Ducey, reports Alia Beard Rau of The Arizona Republic.
Ducey, the state treasurer, won the Republican nomination for governor last week, after a heated six-way race that has left some of his rivals hesitating to back him.
“[We] as Republicans must rally behind our party’s nominee after the primary. That’s why I am endorsing Doug’s candidacy for Governor and encourage others to do the same.”
The statement seems at least partially aimed at former Mesa Mayor Scott Smith and former GoDaddy executive Christine Jones, the other Republican front -runners in the race. Neither has endorsed Ducey.
Former California congressman Frank Riggs and former Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas have endorsed Ducey.
