Phoenix lost the most construction jobs of any metro area in the nation during the past year, according to data released Wednesday by the Associated General Contractors of America.
A decade ago, the area led the U.S. in homebuilding, but the metro Phoenix construction industry contracted by 6,900 jobs during the 12 months ending Sept. 30, 2014. A record gap in prices between new and existing homes is behind Phoenix’s homebuilding slump.
Houston had the biggest gain in building jobs — 13,500 during the 12 months.
Two hundred thirty-six metro areas posted gains in construction employment, 53 showed losses and the remaining 50 were flat for jobs.
