Florida county horses around with equine law

The Florida Keys may be home to sea horses, but not many actual horses. Bt there are some, and the Monroe County Commission may set out new rules today to define where horses can live in the unincorporated county.

“We do get occasional calls from people asking where they can legally keep a horse,” said Christine Hurley, Monroe County Director of Growth Management. “The problem is that we’ve never had any regulation to say where you can have a horse.”

In Monroe County, horses technically fall under the definition of livestock, which county land-use rules say can be allowed only on land with “appropriate” zoning.
