A long-vacant historic church in Phoenix could be getting a new lease on life.
Work crews and contractors are reinforcing outer walls of what was the sanctuary and tower of the First Baptist Church in downtown Phoenix.
The restoration work is a first step in preparing the church property for possible redevelopment, said Terry Goddard, former Phoenix mayor and Arizona attorney general, who has been involved with the nonprofit group that owns the church property.
“She is a great girl, but needs a bit of backbone. We are putting steel on the walls to make sure she stands for another 100 years or so,” said Goddard, now senior counsel with the law offices of Dentons US LLP.
