How much is that doggie in the window?
If you’re in Phoenix, not as much as other cities. That’s according to a new study from a trio of websites that analyzed the total cost of pet ownership across the country.
From real estate options to pet health insurance, Phoenix is the most affordable major U.S. city to own a dog, according to the study, which was compiled by Seattle-based real estate brokerage website Redfin, pet insurance provider Trupanion and dog sitters-for-hire website Rover.com.
In Phoenix, the average dog-friendly rent runs $1,101 a month, which is 21 percent less than the average monthly rent of $1,400 across all rental units. Compare that to the most expensive city, San Francisco, where it costs 14 percent more a month for a dog-friendly apartment. Of course, whether you have a pet or not, average monthly rent in San Francisco is pretty eye-popping: $4,333 for all rentals vs. $4,941 for a pet-friendly unit.
