County assessor pleads not guilty to violation of ‘nepotism law’

Yavapai County Assessor Pamela J. Pearsall on Monday, June 8, pleaded not guilty to two counts of violation of a law that prohibits county officials from hiring family members.

Coconino County Attorney David Rozema filed the charges after an investigation by the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office determined that Pearsall violated the law by allowing the hiring of her daughter, Ashley Stewart. Stewart was paid $4,381 for two temporary stints working in Pearsall’s office between November 2014 and February 2015.

State law makes it illegal for a county executive to appoint a close relative to any job paid with public money.
