Daily developments: Glendale asks for break on payment to Coyotes

Glendale wants to skip a $3.75 million payment to the Arizona Coyotes as part of its effort to terminate its agreement with the team.

Cynthia Ricketts, a private attorney hired by the city to represent Glendale, filed a motion in Maricopa County Superior Court on Wednesday asking Judge Dawn Bergin to allow Glendale to either withhold the fourth-quarter payment to the Coyotes or deposit the $3.75 million into an escrow account.

The final quarterly payment of the 2014-15 fiscal year, which is due July 1, is a portion of the $15 million the city agreed to pay the Coyotes annually in the arena management and lease agreement with the team for the Gila River Arena. That deal was approved in July 2013.
