A major development in the long drawn-out battle over the Loop 202 expansion. The Gila River Indian Community filed a motion to stop the freeway from being built through neighborhoods at the base of South Mountain. It means going back to early 2012 when the Gila River Community included the option of building the expansion on their land, south of Pecos. That was shut down, but the filing of the current motion says that option is no longer a possibility the community will consider.
“Our people have spoken, they voted no build,” said Gila River Indian Community Gov. Stephen Roe Lewis.
Now the community is taking on the government.
“It’s a big deal when a sovereign nation steps up and files a lawsuit,” said Court Rich from the Rose Law Group.
