Former House Speaker Andy Tobin tells supporters in an e-mail he will not run for Congress in CD1.
“I’m confident that a Republican candidate will win AZCD1 back. But that candidate will not be me,” Tobin wrote.
He ran unsuccessfully for the seat two years ago.
Former Secretary of State Ken Bennett, a close friend of Tobin’s, announced last week he will seek the Republic nomination for the seat.
A host of other candidates are mentioned or announced for the district seat. They include Pinal County businessman Gary Kiehoe, Pinal Sheriff Paul Babeu, state Senator Barbara McGuire and Arizona House Speaker David Gowan.
The House seat will be open with the decision by Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick to run for the U.S. Senate, hoping to unseat Sen. John McCain.
McCain leads Kirkpatrick by double digits, 53-38, in a poll commissioned by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The Yellow Sheet Report sayst the poll, which surveyed 600 respondents, shows McCain ahead by 15 points overall and with 18 points in the Phoenix media market.
