It’s called “Grampa’s Grill,” believed to be the first-ever restaurant to limit its customers to kids ages 5-8.
Located in Old Town Scottsdale, the unique eatery hires only grandfathers as waiters, cooks and other staff. The menu lists only healthful foods.
“This is our way of making kids feel special with their own place to eat out and avoid fast foods that are responsible for child obesity,” said Charles Stafford, 78, who partnered with his 80-year-old brother, Blaine, in establishing Grampa’s.
Parents simply drop off their kids at the front door, where valets escort them into the restaurant, which inside features low tables and small chairs.
Every single meal is $5, which the valets collect from the parents when they drive up, and they are required to return in one hour to pick up the child clientele.
The kids receive tee shirts emblazoned with “Grampa’s Grill — We’re on our own.”
The Stafford brothers are thinking about opening a second restaurant in Gilbert, where kids can bring their pets. They also mentioned the possibility of opening a “Shirts and Shoes Are Not Required” café in Paradise Valley.
