Historic neighborhood restoration efforts go forth in Mesa

One brick at a time, one house at a time, one neighborhood at a time.

Saving what remains of Mesa’s architectural past is slow work — so slow that time often wins, grinding irreplaceable relics into dust.

But the slow work goes on, with progress to report on three fronts:

The restoration of a territorial-era downtown home that for years stood as little more than a brick shell.

Efforts by four neighborhoods, some further along than others, to win historic designation from the city.

The possibility that after years of lean budgets, Mesa might again have a full-time historic-preservation officer.
