There are few pals in politics: American government in a stage of dying

By Phil Riske

Managing Editor, Rose Law Group Reporter

He and his family were among the first people we met when we moved to Arizona.

His construction and development business was one of the first advertisers on my radio station.

He managed my campaign for Casa Grande City Council.

For 33 years, my dear friend, Bob Gallo, and I debated politics. We kidded each other about our positions on national issues. They were friendly disagreements between two pals.

We both always went to polls on Election Day, but — stricken by cancer —  he voted early this year.

Bob Gallo died this morning after his second onslaught of cancer.

I have never seen a more loving, supporting family than the Gallo family of Casa Grande.

A marvelous hospice nurse was at the house during his final days. She brought a book about the stages of dying.

Post Script:

In a way, the Gallo death is a message for bipartisanship — friendship’s power over differing politics.

America has been in a deadly stage of acrimony and polarization.

We need more pals, more friendships in government.

I’m convinced Bob would agree.
