A proposed light-rail extension remains on track, but not without questions by some city council members, who want answers primarily over its capability to revitalize downtown before deciding whether to formally back the project.
The council also learned the city will sell bonds to finance its portion of the cost, which amounts to less than half the 35-40 percent local share Glendale would split with Phoenix. The bond debt would be paid through ongoing revenues generated by Glendale’s GO Tax, city Transportation Engineer Debbie Albert told the council. The half-cent sales tax approved by voters in 2001 funds a transportation program. That program includes a light-rail corridor from the city’s eastern border at 43rd Avenue to its downtown.
