Arizona House shut down as protesters demonstrate against ‘hateful rhetoric’

Officials closed the doors to the Arizona House of Representatives during an anti-Trump, pro-immigrant rally at the state Capitol on Wednesday and put up signs that entry into the People’s House was for “official state business only.”

Speaker of the House David Gowan sent an email out to staffers and legislators Tuesday afternoon warning that due to the protest organized by the Puente Human Rights Movement, the House would lock its doors and search those seeking entry to the chamber. Gowan told lawmakers and staff to use another entrance in order to avoid the protesters.

“Tomorrow we are expecting a large crowd of protesters that are scheduled to gather at 10 a.m. in the Rose Garden to the west of the members’ parking lot,” Gowan wrote. “DPS, Security, and other House staff will be active and alert tomorrow, but you are advised to keep your eye out. And please, if you see something, say something.”
