The inquisition: For county recorder, information session devolves into ‘public flogging’

The man with a Bernie Sanders button pinned to his shirt took notice when Maricopa County Recorder Helen Purcell entered the room.

Purcell took her seat next to her longtime elections director, Karen Osborne, and a lobbyist with the Arizona Association of Counties, Jennifer Marson.

The man pointed at each to offer his opinion one at a time.

“Lobbyist. Criminal. Criminal,” the man said, his last pointing gesture stopping at the 80-year-old Purcell.
