There are no ‘October surprises’

I’ll always remember waking up in my university dorm room in 1960 and hearing on the radio John Kennedy had upset Richard Nixon for the presidency. Politically naïve at the time, I wondered how could that possibly happen.

Here we are, 14 presidential elections years later, and I realized long ago there are no surprises in politics.

This year’s presidential election has been the most divisive, crude, flawed, expensive and media-frenzied race on record. And the vagaries of the contest for the White House have seeped into our local elections, albeit to a lesser degree: millions of dollars dumped into the race for corporation commission to outright political war between two women for a seat in the Arizona Legislature to the influence of so-called dark money in various races.

Political challengers always call for change. Voters call for change in a broken system.

The only surprise in politics would be if our broken politics got fixed somehow. Until then, expect anything.
