The Phoenician resort wants to trade part of its championship golf course for hundreds of new homes under a major redesign for the roughly 315-acre property at the base of Camelback Mountain.
The city of Phoenix will consider a rezoning of the land to allow for the development of 382 new houses, townhomes, condos and resort casitas, according to the proposal. The resort’s 27 holes of golf would be pared down to 18 to make space for many of them.
The vision would be a major change for the resort and its decades-old golf course. But the land has long been approved for construction of about 321 of those units, said Paul Gilbert, a land-use attorney representing the project.
