Phoenix building employment up 4% in past year

Figures released Wednesday by the Associated General Contractors of America show the metro Phoenix construction industry has added more than 3,000 jobs in the past year for a growth rate of 4 percent.

With a 91,500-construction workforce as of October, the Phoenix area ranks No. 11 out of 337 metropolitan areas in terms of actual jobs gained, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

But when speaking of that job growth in terms of a percentage, the Valley ranks far down the list at No. 72, the report said.

As for construction job gains — also in terms of raw numbers — the Houston area ranked No. 1 with a whopping increase of 17,400 workers.
