Arizona utility regulators began hearings Monday on the value of rooftop solar electricity, and are considering a variety of measures that would change the equation for how customers are paid for power they send to the utility grid.
Utilities like Arizona Public Service Co. currently rely on a system called net metering to give customers credit for electricity their solar panels send to the grid. Each kilowatt-hour from solar panels that goes to the grid is credited on their monthly bill. The credits roll over month to month and offset electricity they draw from the utility at night or when their panels are not making enough electricity to serve their needs.
