Candidate list grows for school chief’s post

Two more candidates have joined the 2018 race for superintendent of public instruction, and neither challenger to Republican Diane Douglas had kind words for the incumbent.

Tempe City Councilman David Schapira, a Democrat who has also served in the House and as Senate minority leader, and former U.S. Rep. Frank Riggs, a Republican, announced their bids on Tuesday.

Schapira made his intent to seek the office public after fellow Democrat David Garcia opted to take on Gov. Doug Ducey for his seat. Garcia lost Douglas in 2014.

Shapira said in an interview Tuesday Douglas has failed Arizona students, families and teachers.
