Deal on election dates expected to bring quick end to legislative session

A deal struck on a bill to consolidate election dates likely allows the Arizona House and Senate to avoid a flurry of late night voting on Thursday night, all due to the absence of a Republican lawmaker off in Louisiana.

Sen. Kate Brophy McGee, the only GOP senator opposed to a measure to require municipal tax increase elections be held in November of even-number years, voted yes on SB1152. With only 17 Republican lawmakers in the Senate — one of whom was absent — and firm no votes from all the chamber’s Democrats, hers was the final vote necessary to approve the bill.

Had Brophy McGee, a Phoenix Republican, remained opposed, the Senate would’ve simply waited her out.
