Flagstaff high occupancy housing plan available for comment

What happens when 30 or more people, usually college students, all live on one acre of land?

Unsightly buildings that do not fit with the existing neighborhoods, increased traffic congestion and unaffordable rents, according to many concerned community members who attended various public meetings in the last year about high occupancy housing, as the city of Flagstaff staff gathered input to create a plan to deal with higher density housing developments.

After a year of public input, the city released the draft of the High Occupancy Housing Specific Plan last month. By definition, high occupancy housing is a development that has 30 or more dwelling units per acre. The plan aims to create policies that will govern the creation of future high occupancy housing developments, such as, transportation guidelines, sustainability practices, parking management and requirements for public art.
