Higley-Unified-School-DistrictHigley Unified School District officials amended their solar-energy power service agreement with Sundial Arizona after a state audit said improvements were needed.

The audit said the district’s 9.6 cents and 12 cents per kilowatt hour are higher than the 5.7 cents per kilowatt hour that it was paying for electricity before it got solar power. The report concluded that the former contract was unlikely to meet cost-saving expectations.

The estimated cost savings from the adjusted rates alone for one year is projected to save Higley $16,482.

“It was a lot of hard work,” said Art Wagner, Higley’s executive director of support services at a recent school board meeting. “Now the power is used as it is generated and is banked against future power use.”

The school board unanimously approved the amendment last month.
