A lawsuit against Pinal County that attorneys say prompted lawmakers to reform Arizona’s civil asset forfeiture laws has been settled.
Arizona Capitol Times reports a federal judge dismissed the lawsuit Friday after the parties filed notice of settlement.
The suit was filed in July 2015 on behalf of Rhonda Cox, of San Tan Valley, whose truck was seized in 2013 after her son had borrowed it and was arrested.
In a statement, Cox’s attorneys said their client was “vindicated” after five years of fighting the “unlawful” confiscation of her truck.
“Because of Rhonda’s lawsuit, other Arizonans who have their property stolen by the government and find themselves caught in the maze of civil asset forfeiture will face fewer obstacles in their pursuit of justice,” the statement read.
