An Italian company is proposing to build a massive solar-power plant south of Phoenix near the town of Maricopa and the Sonoran Desert National Monument, and it will discuss its plans publicly Tuesday night.
The company, Marisol Energy 2, envisions a project that would generate 300 megawatts, enough power for 75,000 homes, when the sun is shining.
The Maricopa Solar Park Project would require about 1,700 acres of land. The company applied in April with the Bureau of Land Management to use the parcel, BLM spokesman Dennis Godfrey said.
The BLM has designated the land as being appropriate for renewable-energy projects, Godfrey said.
