The Chandler City Council acted to fill vacancies Thursday.

It voted unanimously to appoint Jeremy McClymonds to the council, and chose Councilman René Lopez as the new vice mayor.

Vice Mayor Nora Ellen vacated her seat to run for state Legislature. This move left the spot for vice mayor and a council seat open.

Who is Councilman McClymonds?

Mayor Jay Tibshraeny said 36 Chandler residents applied for the vacant council spot and nine were interviewed.

Council members said the decision wasn’t easy.

“It was difficult, honestly, to come down to our final members,” Councilman Kevin Hartke said.

Lopez encouraged the other eight contenders to continue their community engagement.

McClymonds will serve through January 2021. He has served on the city’s Parks and Recreation Board and with the Kiwanis Chandler Young Professionals.
