The Arizona Court of Appeals heard oral arguments today and said it will issue a decision Friday regarding a Glendale sales tax measure that plays a role in the city’s arena deal for the Phoenix Coyotes hockey team.
The three-judge court in Phoenix heard arguments from attorneys representing the city of Glendale and an anti-tax group called Save Glendale Now.
Earlier this summer, Glendale disqualified a SGN-backed measure reversing a city sales tax increase that helps solve budget shortfalls and pay for city outlays related to the Coyotes.
Thursday’s hearing focused on whether Glendale City Clerk Pam Hanna had the power to disqualify the tax measure, when the measure can go on the ballot and whether ballot language was misleading to voters.
A lower Maricopa County Superior Court sided with Glendale regarding the misleading language and SGN appealed the decision. That same court sided with SGN on some of the technicalities Glendale used to also keep the measure from the November ballot.
